Stresa is famous for Borromean islands. Carlo Borromea was a cardinal at the time Northern Italy started resisting Luther’s influence for the church in the Northern Europe. The holy mountains were built to describe the events of the bible to the public in the way the Catholic church wish to present them.

After the drive to Stresa and brief relaxing, we took the ferry to Isola Pescatore for lunch at Il Covo dei Pirati, It’s such a lovely way to begin vacation in Italy – sitting under umbrellas at the edge of the island on a sunny day with dear friends! We walked downtown for dinner, and again I feel at home in Stresa.
On a new day, Pirjo took me to Sacro Monte di Varallo (Holy Mountain), a historic complex erected at the end of the 15th Century with 44 chapels in which the stages of the life and passion of Christ are represented with natural size terracotta sculptures and paintings.
